A Recognition to Markaz Education Model: Alumni Secure Fulbright Fellowships for Second Consecutive Year

Kozhikode: Markaz continues to make significant strides in academic excellence, as its alumni have once again been selected for the Nehru Postdoctoral Fulbright Fellowship, a prestigious joint US-India government grant, for two consecutive years. This highly coveted fellowship, funded by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) and supported by the US Department of State and the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, stands as one of the most distinguished research awards in international academia.

Dr. Muhammad Roshan Nurani and Dr. Shameer Nurani Ramalloor, both alumni of Markaz Centre for Excellence Jamia Madeenathunnoor, have been honored with the Fulbright Fellowship for 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Dr. Roshan Nurani’s research, titled "Methodology and Scholars of Islamic Knowledge Production in the Modern Era," was selected for the fellowship, enabling him to conduct 22 months of research at the University of California, Berkeley, a globally renowned research institution. After his formative years at Markaz, he pursued a Master’s degree in Sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, qualified UGC-NET, and later joined IIT Chennai in 2014 for research in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. He completed his PhD in 2021 with a dissertation on "Emotional Relationship with the Prophet Muhammad and Spiritual Methodology among Mappila Muslims."

Dr. Shameer Nurani’s research explores the position of the Muslim community in America concerning the US approach to Israel. After studying at Markaz, he obtained a Master’s in International Studies and pursued MPhil-PhD research at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. Before receiving the Fulbright Fellowship, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of West Asian Studies at the University of Kerala, Karyavattom Campus.

The success of these scholars underscores the academic impact of Markaz institutions in fostering inclusive and high-quality education. Their journey—from Markaz to premier Indian universities and now to the prestigious Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship—highlights the global recognition of Markaz’s progressive educational vision and the contributions of Sunni scholars in Kerala.
