Water Research Institute to Be Established at Markaz Knowledge City in Collaboration with Global Experts

Helsinki: Markaz Knowledge City is set to establish a Water Research Institute in collaboration with globally renowned water research institutions. The initiative is being developed in partnership with the Finnish Research Forum, which operates in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, as well as the prestigious Stockholm-based water research institute in Switzerland.

The institute will focus on comprehensive research and studies related to water usage and quality management. Key areas of implementation include wastewater and groundwater management, rainwater harvesting, and sustainable water conservation practices. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All.

In addition to research, the institute will offer expert training, public awareness programs, and advisory services on water use and recycling. Facilities for water quality testing, analysis of drinking water sources, and evaluation of irrigation systems will also be made available. Moreover, the institute will conduct studies on emerging technologies, including hydrogen-powered motor vehicles.

A high-level discussion on the project was held between Dr. Jukka Ilomäki, Senior Advisor to the Water Development Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and Markaz Knowledge City CEO Abdussalam Mohammed. The meeting was also attended by water management expert Matti Pettai, Finnish researcher Lisak Lusua, and Malayali entrepreneur Sameer, based in Finland.

Markaz Knowledge City currently collects 50 million liters of rainwater annually and has an advanced water conservation system that allows for the reuse of 75 percent of the 7.6 lakh liters of water consumed daily. The establishment of the Water Research Institute will further strengthen the city’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
